I-57 Tomberg’s portrayal of Israel’s three “patriarchs”

Anthroposophical Studies of the Old Testament, Chap. 3, Sec. 2

The following chart portrays, according to Tomberg, why one patriarch would not suffice to supply the primary impulse for the history of Israel, and thus why the Bible speaks of “the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob,” as well as how the threefold stream of inheritance through the generations of Israel began.

Father Astral Abraham Impulse Thought
Son Etheric Isaac Impulse Life (Feeling)
Holy Spirit Physical Jacob Impulse Will

Thus the thought of the Father, the Sacrifice of the Son, and the Victory of the Spirit are mirrored in history and the Bible, for the Old Testament is primarily of Abraham’s thought, the New Testament of Isaac’s sacrifice, and the Apocalypse of the future victory of the Spirit.
