I-80 The components of the human being taken into account by psychology and science, and how other components are effective agents beyond the realm of comprehension by psychology and science The Bridge Between Universal Spirituality and the Physical Constitution of Man; Pastoral Medicine Modern
psychology (and science) considers only one part of the human being’s
body (the solid) and one part of its soul (the Ego), and thus cannot
come to an understanding of how they work upon each other. The divisions
of body (left side below) and soul (right side below) are reflected
in the following: (click here for chart) The deeper, and effective, relationships of the upper three components of the body are reflected in the following:
While much in the above charts is beyond our scope, the bridge between universal spirituality and the human being’s physical being starts with the top line of the last chart, and the Warmth-Organism. The bridge is then built by moral ideas and destroyed by theoretical thoughts, as reflected by the following analyses:
Realizing that thinking lies in the nerve sense, feeling in the rhythmic, and willing in the metabolic, an important aspect of the relationship between these areas and our prior lives is reflected in the following Steiner drawing: (click here for drawing) In order to connect the cycle, we must realize that by the phrase “previous Earth lives,” Steiner is speaking of what is carried over from them, primarily what came from the willing (metabolic) element (which, in the first tabulation of this chart, relates to the “Ego—Will—Warmth-Organism— Warmth Ether” category). Our thoughts and our knowledge, to the extent they do not play down into the will element (the “deed” element) do not become the “Seed” of our future spiritual (or worldly existence). As Paul said in 1 Cor 13,8, our “knowledge” does indeed pass away, and this happens with our death in this life; only our will, or deed, element (the true reflector of “love”), the “eternal seed,” passes over. One must, of course, and will immediately see that our moral thoughts and our feelings are activators of our will (deed) element. But thoughts and feelings that we do not carry forth into the outer world in the form of deeds do not carry forward in any positive sense. Steiner carries this forward, saying that there is no eternal conservation of matter or energy, for matter is transformed into semblance and semblance is raised to reality by will—all by the human being who stands as the supreme achievement of the cosmos. It is only because of unwillingness to consider things summarized in this chart that ideas of the imperishability of matter and energy were invented. If they were imperishable, there would be no moral world order. As always, this chart is but a hint, a pointer, and it would be unwise to overlook the fact that a more thorough explanation is available in the lecture texts. |
