Blood, Page Twenty
Lev
1,11,15; 3,2,8,13,17; 4,5-7,16-18,25,30,34; 5,9; 6,27,30; 7,2,14,33;
8,15,19,23-24,30; 9,9,12,18; 10,18; 14,6,14,17,25,28,51-52; 16,14-15,18-19;
Num 19,4-5; 2 K 16,13,15; 2 Ch 29,22,24; Ps
16,4; Ezek 43,18,20; 45,19
7. The genital discharge of blood through childbirth (parturition),
normal menstruation or longer emission:
Lev 12,4-5,7 (childbirth); 15,19 (normal menstruation); 15,25
(longer emission). For childbirth and the longer emission, animal sacrifice
is required as atonement (see 12,6-8 and 15,29-30) though no mention
is made of the animal's blood in these passages.
8. The sanctity of human blood:
Ps 72,14: From oppression and violence he redeems their life
[i.e., the weak and needy]; and precious is their blood in his
sight.
9. The transition away from sacrificing (spilling the blood)
of animals:
Is 1,11c: "I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or
of lambs, or of he-goats." Is 66,3
Heb 10,4,19,29: 4For it is impossible that the blood
of bulls and goats should take away sins. . . . 19Therefore,
brethren, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood
of Jesus. . . . 29How much worse punishment do you think
will be deserved by the man who has spurned the Son of god, and profaned
the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and outraged
the Spirit of grace?
10. Blood as the basis for covenant:
Ex 24,6-8: 6And Moses took half of the blood
[of oxen] and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw
against the altar. 7Then he took the book of the covenant,
and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, "All that the
Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient." 8And
Moses took the blood and threw it upon the people, and said,
"Behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with
you in accordance with all these words."
Ex 34,25; Zech 9,11
Mt 26,28: "for this is my blood of the covenant, which
is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
Mk 14,24: And he said to them, "This is my blood of the
covenant, which is poured out for many."
Lk 22,20: And likewise the cup after supper, saying, "This cup
which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood."
Heb 12,24: and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and
to the sprinkled blood that speaks more graciously than the blood
of Abel.
11. Becoming drunk on human blood, or the wantonness of having
shed it:
Deut 32,42-43; Is 1,15; 9,5; 15,9; 26,21; 34,3,6-7
Is 49,26a: "I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine."
Is 59,3,7; Jer 46,10; 51,35; Lam 4,13-14; Ezek
9,9; 22,12-13,27; 39,17-19; Hos 6,8; Mic 3,9-10; Hab
2,8,12,17; Zech 9,7; Lk 13,1 Rom 3,15
Rev 17,6: And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of
the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.
Rev 18,24
12. The Blood of Christ (ignoring the prophetic aspect of Old Testament
sacrifice of lambs):
(a) As a sacrament of remembrance:
1 Cor 11,25,27: 25In the same way also the cup, after
supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do
this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."… 27Whoever,
therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy
manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the
Lord.
(b) As the agency of human salvation:
Mt 27,49b: And another took a spear and pierced his side, and
out came water and blood.
Lk 22,44: And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and
his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon
the ground.
Jn 19,34: But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,
and at once there came out blood and water.
Acts 20,28; Rom 3,25
Rom 5,9: Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood,
much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
1 Cor 10,16a: The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a
participation in the blood of Christ?
Eph 1,7: In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness
of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. . . .
Eph 2,13: But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have
been brought near in the blood of Christ.
Col 1,19-20: 19For in him all the fullness of God
was pleased to dwell, 20and through him to reconcile to himself
all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood
of his cross.
